WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) issued the following statement on President Biden’s State of the Union address. Senator Hassan brought Hampton Police Chief and Hampton Deputy Director of Emergency Management Alex Reno as her guest of honor, highlighting his service to his community, as well as the work of first responders across the state, in responding to multiple severe weather events, including severe coastal storms that caused flooding and other significant damage along New Hampshire’s coastline.
“Throughout his presidency, President Biden has demonstrated that the best way to tackle any challenge is by bringing the American people together to solve problems – as we did with bipartisan laws to rebuild roads and bridges, address climate change, support veterans exposed to toxic substances, and more. As we look to the year ahead, we must stay focused on growing the middle class, protecting our national security, and doing right by Granite Staters and the American people.
“As Americans continue to feel the pain of high costs, I appreciate that the President is standing up to corporate special interests to lower costs. In 2022, we stood up to Big Pharma and passed the landmark Inflation Reduction Act, which continues to bring down health care and energy costs. But, of course, there is more work to do, and I will stay laser-focused on working to bring down costs for families.
“President Biden also made clear the need for our elected leaders to put our country’s security ahead of partisanship. Last month, we had the chance to pass the strongest bipartisan legislation to improve security at the border in decades – but when it mattered most, Republican Senators caved to Donald Trump’s pressure and walked away from the bill. In a similar manner, House Republicans – again following Trump’s lead – continue to block legislation to get vital aid to Ukraine in their fight against Putin’s brutal invasion. As President Biden noted, we cannot afford to abandon Ukraine, surrender American leadership, and deliver victory to Putin.
“Tonight’s address again demonstrated President Biden’s commitment to tackling key challenges — lowering costs, securing the border, and bolstering our national security by defeating Putin — by following the example of our constituents and working together. Make no mistake: The State of the Union will always be strong if the American people are united – and if their elected leaders are willing to listen to them and deliver results.”
