WASHINGTON – Today, at a bipartisan Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee hearing, Senator Maggie Hassan highlighted the importance of a stable health insurance market so that all Granite Staters and Americans have access to affordable health care.
“I think it’s really critical that as we have this discussion about health care, that we understand how things actually would play out on the ground for the people we are trying to serve. The founding principle of this country is that every single person counts... we’re not going to tolerate people in our states not being able to get health care,” Senator Hassan said.
“I hope as we work to stabilize the markets right now… that we also then move on to a discussion about how we can continue to get our country healthier, lowering costs so that all of us can thrive together, that we can have a workforce that is competitive in the 21st century economy, and that we can make sure that all Americans have the opportunity to enjoy the quality of life that we would all like to have as healthy citizens.”
Tuesday, Senator Hassan participated in a bipartisan HELP Committee hearing where she highlighted the importance of protecting Essential Health Benefits and the need for long-term certainty around funding for cost sharing reductions to foster stability in the health insurance market. Last week, Senator Hassan participated in two HELP Committee hearings where she questioned state insurance commissioners and Governors from across the country about bipartisan solutions to help lower premiums and stabilize the individual market, including the need for federal investment in a reinsurance mechanism.
As part of her efforts to stabilize the health care marketplace and lower health care costs for hard-working Granite Staters, Senator Hassan is an original cosponsor of the Individual Health Insurance Marketplace Improvement Act, which would provide certainty in the marketplace by creating a permanent reinsurance program for the individual health insurance market. Senator Hassan is also an original cosponsor of the Marketplace Certainty Act, which would help stabilize the individual market by providing certainty around cost-sharing reduction payments.
