Hassan, Cassidy introduce bill to strengthen U.S. response to unfair Chinese subsidies

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Bill Cassidy, MD (R-LA) recently introduced a bipartisan bill to help ensure that the U.S. government more quickly responds to China’s unfair trade practices. The Strengthen American Competitiveness Against Harmful Subsidies Act would direct the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative to proactively monitor the People’s Republic of China’s use of industrial subsidies, which hurt American businesses and jobs.

“The Chinese government often doesn’t play by the rules of the road, engaging in anti-competitive behavior using state-owned subsidized companies to undermine U.S. businesses and our economy,” said Senator Hassan. “This bipartisan bill will allow us to more quickly and more forcefully respond to these unfair trade tactics, strengthening our country’s efforts to outcompete China and protect our economy.”

“The Chinese Communist Party is strengthening economic ties with Latin America through bribery, debt traps, and incentivizing corruption. We need to counter CCP investments as they happen rather than waiting until we feel the effects,” said Dr. Cassidy.

Hassan is working across the aisle to outcompete China. Last year, she worked with her colleagues to pass into law the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act, which helps support our supply chains, lowers costs, and helps America outcompete countries like China by investing in research and manufacturing here at home. Additionally, last week the Senate passed its annual defense bill with a bipartisan measure that Senator Hassan authored to prepare for emerging national security threats posed by quantum technology, which could potentially be used by the Chinese government or other adversaries to decode encrypted messages and data.
