(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Representatives Annie Kuster (NH-02) and Chris Pappas (NH-01) announced today that New Hampshire has received $4,055,624 in AmeriCorps funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that administers AmeriCorps and other national service programs. The funding from CNCS will support 195 AmeriCorps members in New Hampshire serving through City Year New Hampshire, the Student Conservation Association, the New Hampshire Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, Goodwill Industries of Northern New England and the Squam Lakes Association.
“During this crisis we need public service now more than ever,” said Senator Shaheen. “AmeriCorps programs deliver critical services to Granite Staters, particularly those in need, and often help foster a lifetime of service among members. This funding will support job training, as well as assistance for those in recovery from substance use disorder and for survivors of sexual and domestic violence. I’m pleased to see this federal funding be awarded to New Hampshire, and I’ll continue to work in the Senate to secure strong federal funding for national service programs.”
“AmeriCorps volunteers perform admirable work in the best of times, but as this pandemic continues to place an unprecedented strain on Granite Staters, their mission has become more important than ever,” Senator Hassan said. “I am pleased that New Hampshire’s AmeriCorps program has received this federal funding to help volunteers meet the needs of individuals, including those battling substance misuse and survivors of domestic violence. I will keep fighting to ensure that this critical program receives the support it needs to serve New Hampshire communities.”
"The importance of public service is underscored by the health and economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Congresswoman Kuster. “This AmeriCorps funding will help to strengthen and support New Hampshire communities and provide Granite Staters with important resources as we work towards recovery. Recently, I was proud to cosponsor legislation to create 750,000 AmeriCorps positions across the country and provide a comprehensive, locally focused, national service strategy to address, move forward and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. I will continue working in Congress to support AmeriCorps and other national service programs in New Hampshire and across the country."
“This is a time when the AmeriCorps mission of improving lives and fostering civic engagement could not be more important,” said Congressman Chris Pappas. “National service programs like AmeriCorps are instrumental in our community life and will play an important role in helping us weather this pandemic. I’m pleased these funds from the Corporation for National and Community Service are coming to New Hampshire.”
AmeriCorps engages more than 75,000 Americans every year in intensive service at places across the country, including nonprofits, schools, public agencies, and community and faith-based groups. The program is administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service. For more information, visit here.
Senator Shaheen is a strong supporter of national service programs. Last week, Shaheen introduced the Pandemic Response and Opportunity Through National Service Act, legislation that would fund 750,000 national service positions over a three-year response and recovery period, in part to meet the projected need for as many as 300,000 public health workers.
