(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced with U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Representatives Annie Kuster (NH-02) and Chris Pappas (NH-01) $8,427,680 for New Hampshire organizations to provide emergency housing and other housing assistance to vulnerable homeless individuals and families throughout New Hampshire. Specifically, the funding was provided through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Continuum of Care Program, which provides funding for efforts by nonprofits, states and local governments to quickly rehouse homeless individuals, families and youth, as well as persons fleeing domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
“The devastating impact of this pandemic on New Hampshire’s most vulnerable populations cannot be overstated. Working families and Granite Staters from all walks of life are experiencing the most severe housing crisis in recent history, leaving many already vulnerable from the economic impact of COVID at even greater risk of being left without a home and nowhere to go. These grants, in part, will specifically assist survivors of domestic violence who have been left in dangerous living situations due to stay-at-home orders and social distance practices spurred by the pandemic. This funding could not have come at a more critical time,” said Senator Shaheen. “These awards will help our frontline housing relief agencies, organizations and nonprofits provide rapid, urgently needed emergency shelter to those who need it most. As negotiations on additional COVID-19 assistance continue, I’ll be fighting for the inclusion of relief our hardest hit Granite Staters need to survive this crisis.”
“Providing housing to individuals in need can save lives, particularly during the winter months,” Senator Hassan said. “This $8.4 million federal grant will help organizations throughout New Hampshire connect vulnerable Granite Staters to safe and stable housing. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to exacerbate the homelessness problem in our state, I will keep working with the delegation to provide much-needed resources to tackle this serious issue and bolster our efforts to provide housing to Granite Staters in need.”
“Everyone needs a safe place to live, and we cannot turn our backs on the most vulnerable among us, especially those who have experienced trauma,” said Representative Kuster. “This funding will help to ensure no Granite Stater is left without a home, which is particularly critical now during the cold winter months and as Americans are encouraged to stay home to stop the spread of COVID-19. I’m thrilled to help announce this much-needed funding for New Hampshire, and I will continue working to support survivors of violence and abuse, ensure struggling families have the resources they need, and combat homelessness in our state.”
“As we work together to deal with the far reaching economic impacts of this pandemic, we cannot overlook the devastating impact it has had on Granite Staters who have become homeless or confined to unsafe living environments,” said Representative Pappas. “These federal dollars will go a long way in supporting our community partners across Manchester, Dover, and Concord, so they can ensure those most in need have a safe place to live during these difficult times. I promise to continue working across the aisle to ensure our families and communities get the housing support they need.”
Last year, Rep. Kuster led a bipartisan letter to the House of Representatives Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development Subcommittee urging increase of Continuum of Care (CoC) program funding for sexual violence and domestic violence survivors.
