Senator Hassan Co-Sponsors Legislation to Lower Prescription Drug Costs for Seniors
WASHINGTON - TODAY, Senator Maggie Hassan co-sponsored legislation to help reduce the cost of prescription drugs for seniors by allowing Medicare to negotiate the best possible price for prescription drugs. Senator Hassan also co-sponsored budget amendments to protect Social Security and Medicare and prevent cuts to the benefits that seniors have earned.
Senator Hassan joined Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) in sponsoring the Medicare Prescription Drug Price Negotiation Act, allowing Medicare to negotiate the price of prescription drugs. The legislation would help reduce the price of prescription drugs for nearly 41 million seniors enrolled in Medicare Part D and increase Medicare savings.
"New Hampshire's seniors have made significant contributions to our communities, our economy and our high quality of life, and we must do more to ensure that they can afford the prescription drugs they depend on," Senator Hassan said. "I am proud to co-sponsor this legislation that will help reduce the price of prescription drugs for nearly 41 million seniors and increase Medicare savings, strengthening health care for Granite Staters and all American seniors."
Senator Hassan is committed to protecting Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. She also joined Senator Hirono (D-HI) in sponsoring an amendment to the budget resolution being debated in the Senate that makes it more difficult to privatize Medicare or turn it into a voucher program, increase the age of eligibility for Medicare or turn Medicaid into a block grant. And Senator Hassan joined Senator Sanders (I-VT) in sponsoring a budget amendment to safeguard against Republican-backed legislation breaking with President-elect Trump's campaign promise to not cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
"We must work together to strengthen and protect these essential benefits that seniors have earned," said Senator Hassan. "I will always stand up for New Hampshire seniors against any attempt to privatize Social Security, turn Medicare into a voucher program or take away affordable, quality health insurance from hard-working Granite Staters."
