Senator Hassan Co-sponsors Legislation to Maintain Fiscal Responsibility and Improve Efficiency in Federal Spending

WASHINGTON - Today, as part of her efforts to maintain fiscal responsibility, Senator Maggie Hassan joined Senators James Lankford (R-OK), Claire McCaskill (D-MO) and Ron Johnson (R-WI) in introducing a bipartisan measure requiring the federal government to publicize the details, costs, and performance metrics of every federal program above $1 million.

Senator Hassan is a member of the Subcommittee on Federal Spending Oversight and Emergency Management and the Subcommittee on Regulatory Affairs and Federal Management within the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. The management of federal agencies falls under the jurisdiction of these subcommittees.

"Maintaining fiscal responsibility is critical to protecting economic priorities for our people and to sustaining the health and stability of our economy," Senator Hassan said. "Creating an online database that tracks financial data and performance metrics for federal programs over $1 million will help improve fiscal responsibility and identify ways to increase the efficiency of federal spending and improve government management. I am proud to co-sponsor this bipartisan measure and I will continue working across the aisle to ensure long-term fiscal responsibility and to eliminate wasteful spending."

In addition to creating a publicly accessible online database of financial data and performance metrics for every federal program above $1 million, the measure also requires all federal agencies to provide taxpayers with an annual report card for all of its federal programs. Under the measure, federal agencies will also be required to provide a description of beneficiaries of every federal program and the number of employees working on each program.

The House passed this bill unanimously in January. Senators John McCain (R-AZ), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), Rob Portman (R-OH), Deb Fischer (R-NE), and Steve Daines (R-MT) also cosponsored the bill.
