SHELBURNE – Senator Maggie Hassan was in the North Country this weekend, where she spoke at the New Hampshire Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) State Convention in Shelburne and met with Clare Mendelsohn, the new Forest Supervisor for the White Mountain National Forest, and visited Wildcat Mountain in Gorham.
At the VFW Convention, Senator Hassan commended New Hampshire’s veterans for their service and thanked them for their selfless commitment to serve on behalf of their fellow Americans.
“I am consistently impressed that even after you have returned home, you continue to look for ways to continue your tradition of service and work to better our communities,” Senator Hasan said. “Too often, veterans face real challenges after returning home. And if we are to be true to our American values, we must do far more to ensure that all of our veterans, service members, and their families have the respect, care, and support that they need and that they have earned. That is my focus as your United States Senator.”
Supporting New Hampshire’s veterans is a top priority for Senator Hassan, and she recently voted to pass the bipartisan VA MISSION Act, which has now been signed into law and works to strengthen the VA system, while also recognizing the importance of community-based care. Additionally, Senator Hassan recently introduced a bipartisan bill with Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) that would prioritize veteran employment and education programs at the VA.
At Wildcat Mountain in Gorham, Senator Hassan met with the Forest Supervisor of the White Mountain National Forest, Clare Mendelsohn, who took the Senator on a tour of the mountain. Senator Hassan highlighted the importance of protecting New Hampshire’s beautiful natural resources and discussed the critical role the White Mountain National Forest plays in the state’s economy.
Senator Hassan is a fervent protector of New Hampshire’s environment. As part of her efforts, she recently introduced the NET METER Act, which would create a national study on net metering that would bolster the state’s renewable energy sector. She has also been outspoken against the Trump Administration’s efforts to undercut environmental protection policies. The Senator spoke on the Senate floor earlier this year, highlighting the importance of acting urgently to combat climate change and criticizing President Trump for filling his Administration with “climate change skeptics who have placed the priorities of Big Oil companies over the protection of our natural resources.”
