Senator Hassan Participates in 99th Annual American Legion Department of NH Convention, Thanks Veterans for their Service and Sacrifice
LINCOLN - Today, Senator Maggie Hassan participated in the 99th Annual American Legion Department of NH Convention where she thanked veterans for their service and sacrifice, and discussed her commitment to ensuring that veterans and their families have the support they have earned.
"Veterans in New Hampshire and across the nation have bravely sacrificed in defense of our freedoms, and we must do everything that we can to ensure that they and their families receive the full care and support that they deserve," Senator Hassan said. "Members of the American Legion continue to set an example for all of us through their commitment to supporting active duty service members, their fellow veterans, and all of their fellow citizens. American Legion members continue to demonstrate a never-ending dedication to service and sacrifice, representing the very best of character that makes our state truly as strong as granite.
"In the Senate, I'm working with members of both parties to improve services and care for our veterans," added Senator Hassan. "I hear from far too many veterans in New Hampshire who are frustrated by the slow, inefficient, and complex VA appeals process - so I have joined a bipartisan group of colleagues to introduce legislation that establishes a new system that is more transparent and gives veterans the option to choose the path that works best for them when seeking an appeal from the VA. I have also cosponsored several pieces of legislation to address gender disparities at the VA and provide education benefits to service members. I will continue working across the aisle to ensure that all of our veterans have the resources and support they have earned and deserve."
Senator Hassan joined Senators Johnny Isakson (R-GA), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), and Jon Tester (D-MT) in introducing the bipartisan Veterans Appeals Improvement and Modernization Act of 2017 to help reduce wait times and improve the process for veterans in New Hampshire and America seeking benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Earlier this month, Senator Hassan joined a bipartisan group of colleagues on a letter to the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies urging them to support robust funding for State Veterans Homes that help provide long-term care to our nation's veterans.
