Senator Hassan Secures Relief for New Businesses in COVID-19 Relief Package

Senate Bill Also Includes Measures Championed by Senator Hassan to Provide Restaurant Relief & Additional Relief to Hardest-Hit Businesses

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) secured critical relief for New Hampshire businesses in the COVID-19 relief package that the Senate voted to advance today.

Relief for New Businesses

The package includes the bipartisan Recovery Startup Assistance Act that Senator Hassan introduced to provide payroll assistance through the Employee Retention Tax Credit to new small businesses started during the pandemic. The bill will support entrepreneurship and help new businesses create jobs throughout the economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. So far, many new businesses have been unable to access other COVID-19 relief programs.

“New Hampshire entrepreneurs have always been key to our state’s economy, and that’s especially true now amid the COVID-19 pandemic. New businesses can help our economy recover and provide good-paying jobs, which is why it is so important that they receive COVID-19 assistance,” said Senator Hassan. “I am thrilled that my bipartisan bill to support new businesses is in the next package, and I will continue pushing to get this across the finish line.”

Relief for Restaurants & Hardest-Hit Businesses

The COVID-19 relief package also includes $25 billion that will provide specific relief to the restaurant and hospitality industries. Senator Hassan called on Senate leaders to ensure that this specific relief was included in the package released today.

In addition, Senator Hassan led a bipartisan push in the Senate to expand the Employee Retention Tax Credit in order to further support businesses hardest hit with major revenue losses due to the pandemic, including those in the live entertainment and performing arts industries. The expansion that Senator Hassan called for is in the package.

“Restaurants, theaters, and concert venues play such a vital role in bringing people together, building community, and creating jobs. They have been among the businesses hardest-hit by COVID-19, and I’m very glad to have secured additional support for these businesses in the upcoming relief package so that they can stay afloat,” said Senator Hassan.
