WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) issued the following statement on the vote last night to continue government funding and avert a shutdown:
“Government shutdowns have real and severe impacts on the American people, including by risking our national security and threatening livelihoods – which is why it is important that we voted on a bipartisan basis to avert a shutdown. The legislation we passed also includes vital disaster relief funding and economic assistance for farmers.
“But I want to be clear – the only reason that we were on the brink of a shutdown is because House Republicans caved to President-elect Donald Trump and Elon Musk, who at the last minute opposed a bipartisan deal reached after months of negotiations. That bipartisan agreement included crucial measures that were left out of the bill we passed last night, including ones that would have lowered health care costs and strengthened efforts to prevent and treat addiction. Moving forward, I urge my colleagues to work in good faith to find common ground and deliver for the American people.”
