WASHINGTON – Today, Senator Maggie Hassan issued the following statement after voting to confirm Christopher Wray as FBI Director:
“In the wake of President Trump’s abrupt firing of former FBI Director James Comey and the President’s own suggestion that he fired Comey because of the FBI’s ongoing investigation into the Trump campaign and Russian interference in the 2016 election, it is essential that our next FBI director is able to demonstrate true independence from the political influence of this Administration. Mr. Wray pledged throughout his confirmation hearings that he would not succumb to political pressure from the White House, and moving forward he must maintain that commitment and continue to demonstrate real independence in order to ensure complete confidence in our democratic institutions. I look forward to working with Mr. Wray to keep all Granite Staters and Americans safe, secure, and free.”
