Senator Hassan Statement on Dr. David Shulkin's Nomination to Lead the Department of Veterans Affairs

WASHINGTON - Today, Senator Maggie Hassan issued the following statement on her support for Dr. David Shulkin for Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Dr. Shulkin previously served as the Department's Under Secretary for Health in the Obama Administration.

"After meeting with Dr. David Shulkin, I am satisfied that he has the qualifications and experience needed to lead the VA effectively and continue much-needed reforms to uphold the promises that we've made to our veterans," said Senator Hassan. "I look forward to working with Dr. Shulkin to ensure that all veterans have access to high-quality care -- including behavioral health and substance misuse treatment. I also urge Dr. Shulkin to work with Congress to protect the VA from President Trump's executive order freezing federal hiring, which has only exacerbated long-standing staff deficiencies at the department. I will continue to work across party lines to ensure that the VA has the resources it needs to provide our veterans with the support that they have earned."
