Senator Hassan Statement on Election Certification

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) released the following statement after Congress certified the election results following an insurrection at the Capitol:

“Free and fair elections, followed by the peaceful transfer of power when those elections are complete, are our nation’s bedrock. It is a testament to our democracy that Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle came together to certify the results of the election after an insurrection at the Capitol.

“It is hard to fully process the destructive and un-American scenes that we witnessed, which followed weeks of the President and his allies sowing doubt in our election system and undermining our democracy. But we did not let the mob that stormed the Capitol have the final word – we finished what we started and certified this election, on a bipartisan basis. I look forward to working with a bipartisan coalition of Republicans and Democrats, and incoming President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, to rise above partisanship and protect the values and freedom that we hold dear as we move forward from today.”
