WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH), a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, issued the following statement after President-elect Joe Biden announced that he will nominate Boston Mayor Martin Walsh to be the next Secretary for the United States Department of Labor:
“Marty Walsh, who first joined a union when he was 21 years old, has dedicated his career to preserving the hard-fought rights of workers and helping to ensure that everyone who works hard can get ahead and stay ahead. I’ve known Marty a long-time, and as Mayor of Boston, he has helped grow wages, expand economic opportunity, and ensure that low-income Bostonians have access to the resources that they need be to be included in our shared success. I look forward to hearing more from Mayor Walsh about his plans to help our economy recover, create jobs, and support our frontline workforce.
“As Americans continue to face devastating economic challenges resulting from this unprecedented pandemic, we need a Labor Department that is dedicated to working on behalf of all workers to help get our economy back on track. Through my work on the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, I am committed to working across the aisle and with the incoming Biden administration to protect the health and economic wellbeing of our workers, as well as fight against efforts to undermine critical workers’ rights.”
