WASHINGTON – Senator Maggie Hassan released the following statement on the resignation of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. Senator Hassan serves as the ranking member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs subcommittee on Federal Spending Oversight and Emergency Management:
“Secretary Nielsen will be remembered for implementing the President’s inhumane policy of separating children from their families, an un-American policy that potentially still leaves thousands of children separated from their families. America faces real threats to our homeland security – from foreign and domestic terrorists, to cyber-attackers and drug traffickers – and we need a Secretary of Homeland Security who will act to confront these challenges head-on, while also standing up to the President when necessary to uphold the rule of law and the fundamental American values that make us strong.”
