WASHINGTON - Senator Maggie Hassan released the following statement on reported plans from President Trump and Secretary DeVos to cut $10.6 billion from federal education initiatives:

"The Department of Education's proposed budget from President Trump and Secretary DeVos would be nothing short of a disaster for our public education system. From hurting students who experience disabilities and slashing funding to schools in high-need communities, to significantly cutting grants for career and technical education and overhauling federal financial aid for higher education, this dangerous proposal undermines our public education system while promoting the misguided Trump-DeVos agenda of diverting taxpayer dollars to private, religious, and for-profit schools without requirements for accountability.

"I will continue fighting to improve our public education system and ensure that all students have the opportunity to reach their full potential."
