WASHINGTON – Senator Maggie Hassan released the following statement after voting to avert a government shutdown:
“I voted in favor of a short-term funding bill in order to keep the government open and ensure that the American people can access the services they depend on. However, I am disappointed that Washington Republicans’ focus on passing a backward tax bill to benefit corporate special interests and the ultra-wealthy prevented Congress from passing a long-term funding bill that supports critical priorities in a responsible way. We need to come together to provide significant additional funding to combat the opioid crisis, to fund the Children’s Health Insurance Program and community health centers, to protect Dreamers, and to support vital law enforcement agencies including the Department of Homeland Security, FBI and DEA. I urge my Republican colleagues to begin to work with us in a bipartisan way to address these priorities as quickly as possible in the new year.”
