WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) issued the following statement ahead of the one-year anniversary of the January 6th attack:
“The events of January 6, 2021 mark one of the darkest days in our democracy. On that day, we saw insurrectionists propelled by conspiracy theories storm the Capitol and seek violence against Capitol police officers, lawmakers, and all who work at the Capitol. They sought to stop the peaceful transition of power - the very hallmark of our democracy.
“Over the past year, I have reflected back on this day often. I am filled with gratitude for the Capitol Police who - at great costs to themselves - protected our democracy and the safety of those in the building. It is a day that has only deepened my resolve and commitment to protecting our free, fair, and impartially-administered elections and ensuring that we continue to have a government of, by, and for the people. We can and we must have vigorous disagreements over policy, but our fundamental responsibilities as Americans are to safeguard our democracy and respect each other’s dignity and freedom.”
