WASHINGTON – Today, Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) joined Senators Bob Casey (D-PA), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), members of the disability community, and advocates for a press conference to highlight the devastating impact Trumpcare and the President’s reckless budget proposal would have on individuals who experience disabilities. Trumpcare includes more than $830 billion in cuts to Medicaid over the next decade, in addition to $610 billion in cuts included in the Trump budget proposal, threatening critical services for millions of people with disabilities across New Hampshire and America.
“Trumpcare and the President’s reckless budget proposal to gut Medicaid would be devastating for individuals across the country who experience disabilities,” Senator Hassan said. “These cuts jeopardize supports needed for many individuals to live independently, fully participate in their communities, and even determine whether a student receives necessary supports at school. With less resources from Medicaid, school districts would also be faced with cutting other services, including school nurses, behavioral health services, health screenings, and more, undermining the quality of education that all of our children receive. We cannot afford to go back to the days where we marginalize or don’t assist some of our most vulnerable students, and I will stand strong in fighting against Trumpcare and the Trump budget that would pull us backward.”
Superintendents across New Hampshire have spoken out about what the proposed cuts to Medicaid would mean for their schools and the quality of education they strive to provide all Granite State students. Last year, New Hampshire schools received $29 million in Medicaid funding. Under Trumpcare and the President’s reckless budget proposal, this funding would be put at risk.
