Shaheen, Hassan, & Kuster Announce $1.1M Grant for Hybrid Electric Diesel Buses in Nashua

(Washington, DC) – Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Annie Kuster (NH-02) announced a $1.1 million Low or No Emission Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to replace two 2010 diesel trolleys with two new hybrid electric diesel buses, significantly reducing emissions from the city’s fixed route fleet while also increasing fuel efficiency.

“This grant represents an exciting improvement to existing public transportation and will be better for the environment,” said Shaheen, who advocated for this funding as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. “I am pleased to see Nashua leading efforts to reduce our state’s emissions and I will continue to work across the aisle to advocate for funding that updates aging transportation infrastructure in New Hampshire.”

“This grant will allow the City of Nashua to upgrade their city buses and continue their efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote fuel efficiency,” said Hassan. “New Hampshire has consistently been a leader in working to fight pollution and the harmful impacts of climate change, and I’ll keep pushing to ensure that New Hampshire has the funding and support it needs to continue this vital work.”

“A robust public transit system is critical to the economy in Nashua and if we can foster a system that’s also good for the environment, it’s a win-win,” said Kuster who wrote to the Federal Transit Administration in support of the grant. “I was proud to support this grant which will allow Nashua to bolster clean transit options, and I look forward to continuing to advocate for funding for Nashua and communities throughout New Hampshire to expand and improve their public transit systems.”
