(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) announced today that Methuen Construction, a Plaistow-based construction company, secured a $13 million federal contract with the United States Navy to modernize and upgrade dry dock pumping facilities related to the docking and undocking of submarines at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
“I’m very pleased to see the United States Navy award Methuen Construction this federal contract, empowering another Granite State business to play a role in strengthening our country’s national defense,” said Senator Shaheen. “New Hampshire businesses and manufacturers are known for their significant contributions to our national defense programs, so I’m glad to see Methuen Construction participate in that network of local companies investing in our military readiness, and specifically here at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. I offer my sincere congratulations to Methuen Construction and look forward to seeing their continued efforts on behalf of both our community and our nation.”
“The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is critical to our economic vitality on the Seacoast and integral to our national security,” said Senator Hassan. “I commend the U.S. Navy for awarding Methuen Construction this federal investment, which will not only spur economic growth and support workers, but will also help ensure that the hard-working men and women of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard have the resources and support they need to continue working to keep our country safe, secure, and free.”
“Methuen Construction is honored to have been awarded this important project, allowing us to continue our support of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard’s critical mission,” said Joe Barbone, President and CEO of Methuen Construction.
Senator Shaheen toured Methuen Construction last year. During her visit, Shaheen spoke with President Joe Barbone and Founder and former President Leon Asadoorian about the company’s workforce development efforts, their focus on closing the skills gap and the company’s involvement with SkillsUSA, which connects college and high school students with technical apprenticeships and training opportunities.
