(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) issued the following statements after President Trump announced that he has agreed to reopen the government. The Senate will soon vote on a bill that opens the government for three weeks and allows for negotiations on border security legislation – a framework proposed by Senators Shaheen and Hassan yesterday.
“I’m very relieved that the President has finally agreed to reopen the government and we need to pass this legislation immediately to provide relief to federal workers and the American people,” said Shaheen. “This shutdown is reckless and completely unnecessary, and shouldn’t have ever happened. Border security remains a bipartisan priority and I hope this agreement will provide a valuable opportunity to stem the flow of drugs coming across the border and make needed reforms to our immigration system.”
“I’m relieved that the President finally agreed to reopen the government while we keep negotiating on addressing border security,” said Hassan. “Countless Americans have suffered because of a shutdown that never should have happened. We can find a way forward but the President must stop using people as political pawns.”
